Growatt is a Chinese manufactured inverter that seems to currently be making waves in the Indian market- thanks primarily to it’s low pricing. I had considered Growatt as a product to bring to India in 2014 and to test the waters had installed it with a 4.5 kW system at my house. The following is a detail of my experience with Growatt.
Inverter Build quality- 2.5/5
Growatt is a large and bulky inverter– the 5 kW Growatt inverter is almost as large as the 25 kW Fronius Symo. It requires two people to handle a Growatt inverter and mounting it to the wall was a challenge. The display on the front is very minimalistic and carries only basic information.
Growatt’s only claim to flexibility is a sufficiently wide voltage range (150-800V). However, the fishy thing is that the MPPT voltage range equals the PV input range exactly- i.e. there is no scope for variation at very high and low temperatures, in effect limiting the input range.
After Sales Service- 0/5
At my installation, the voltage of each string shown on Growatt’s shoddy screen was coming up to be different- this was not the case when we checked actual string voltage using a multimeter. The inverter that I had installed at home, would repeatedly get switched off multiple times a day without any reason. I literally had to employ one person full time to switch on/ re-start the inverter each hour. I suspect the Growatt doesn’t have a fault ride through.
Growatt has no service network in India. When I purchased the inverter, the company promised me that they would replace the product in case of any issues. However, despite the repeated follow ups regarding the two issues stated above, Growatt was unable to provide support. I replaced the Growatt with a Fronius Symo without changing anything else and the system now runs beautifully.
Price Point- 5/5
The Growatt is a cheap inverter. This is its only claim to fame. Buy it if you want an ornament.
I now have two junk Growatt inverters sitting in my basement and am willing to sell them at throwaway prices in case anyone is interested.
Overall Rating: Cheap, Unreliable
